I made varsity several times throughout high school, but had to work quite a bit for it as well. Overall, had a great experience with it though!

Born again Christian. I have been a type 1 diabetic since 2015 and celiac since 2018, and even though I have had my struggles with it, I still strive to live a healthy life. Senior at Utah State University studying Health Science. Hoping to go into pharmaceuticals and focus on diabetic supplies and medicine, because I am quite passionate about helping those that have the same medical condition as I do.

AM- Late morning on the rec center track. Pretty slow running, but I don't know how accurate the watch is for pacing on the track. I have been implementing some dietary changes this week. Mostly whole food and plant based diet, consisting of fruits and vegetables, and I have to say I feel great doing so. Haven't really had any meat and very little dairy over the past week. I have also cut out processed foods this week as well, with the acception of rice cakes as a snack every now and then.

AM- Woke up with an unexpected high blood sugar, which is weird because I didn't eat anything last night that would normally raise it. Still got in 5.5 miles on the rec center track. 33 minutes on the elliptical afterwards, followed by another mile on the track as a cooldown. Might get something else in later after my epidemiology night class, but I will just see how I am feeling.

It has been a week since Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and 7 others lost their lives in a helicopter crash outside L.A. I just felt like doing some type of workout this morning in tribute to all those that lost their lives in the crash. The reps are schemed intentionally for them. The numbers 24 and 8 are for Kobe Bryant's jersey numbers during his NBA career. The 9 is for the nine people that lost their lives in the crash, and 81 is for the career high points that Kobe scored in a game against the Toronto Raptors. I know that people die everyday, and that everyone's lives are important, I just wanted to do this workout today, because before I started running, basketball was my favorite sport. #MambaMentality

Overall I felt really good during most of this workout. I have improved on the double unders and weighted situps by about 30 seconds, and my wattage power on the bike keeps getting stronger, so that is good. Stomach felt a bit full from going to breakfast for my nephews birthday, but other than that, everything was solid.

I am just going to treat tomorrow's half marathon as an LSD long run and probably pace my friend Stephanie, who hopes to run the best she can, even though she has had problems with her achilles lately. We had a pretty busy day today driving up to Sedona and doing a few hikes. Coming down here brings back memories of driving hundreds of miles to run NXR with Eugene and my other cross country pals! AM- Today I ran the Mesa/Phoenix Half Marathon, basically as a long run. I originally was planning on running the marathon, because I wanted to make a qualifying time for NYC Marathon, which is 2:53 or under. I never really like to cheat myself out on whatever my current fitness is, because in running it cannot be "faked". My training so far has not been up to par of what I would like, and I am not in 2:50 shape as of right now, however, this doesn't mean that I can't get into sub 2:50 shape later in the year. From the start of the race, I knew that I wasn't going to race the half, so I decided to run with the 1:40 pacer for this race. I could have went faster, but I am not sure how much faster. Overall, I really enjoyed the trip down to Phoenix and especially the weather! Boston is approaching soon!

AM- 5.5 miles on the tready. So I have a bit of an update on my anemia/low iron. I just talked to my endocrinologist (type 1 diabetes doctor) yesterday, and she has a possible answer to my low iron and a way that I will be able to increase it. It turns out that I am gluten intolerant right. Even though I have been taking iron supplements for quite some time now, they are never going to help, because my gut needs to heal itself and the only way to do this is by consuming zero gluten for at least two-three months. I think that this has been a problem for me for quite some time now, because I have not felt like the same runner since the Las Vegas Marathon in 2018 when I ran 2:55. My running performance has slowly dwindled down to almost nothing, and it has been quite frustrating to not be able to feel like my normal self. Honestly, I am quite surprised that I have been able to run the marathons and others races in the last year, because of my hemoglobin being so low. Eating gluten free is not the easiest thing to do, because it is in so many different foods (anything that contains wheat, barley, rye, etc), but I am going to give it my best effort, because running and staying healthy mean a lot to me. Boston is only two months away, so I need to make sure that I can make improvements on my iron-deficiency anemia before then. Training will probably have its ups and downs for the next couple of months, but I am hoping I can make some good progress. Sorry for the long post, but with type 1 diabetes and gluten intolerance, I just needed to vent a bit. Anyways wish me luck!

Thanks Eugene, I appreciate the support! Hopefully my gut can heal, so that I can then slowly start incorporating gluten back into my diet, but for now I just need to focus on healing it.

AM- 5.1 miles around Artesia. Made it back just before the rain started coming. Blood sugar levels have been amazing the last few days, rarely in the 200's, and they are pretty flat and stable throughout the day around 80-120mg/dl. Energy levels are kind of low running right now, which might have something to do with the fact that my blood sugar levels are much lower than what I am used to, even though they are in a stable range. Going to let my body feel itself out during my runs over the next week or two.

AM- No running today. Went to a crossfit gym in Artesia with my cousin, and did some HIIT training. We did 3 rounds of 1 minute at each station of: bear crawls, kettlebell figure eights, box jumps, battle ropes, and burpees. Overall a pretty good workout. Went to the Carlsbad Caverns later in the day, which was really neat! Those caves are massive!

AM- Another 5.1 from the AirBnB. 7:51 average. Felt better than on Tuesday. Heading back home tomorrow morning. Also I got accepted to run the 2020 New York City Marathon through Team JDRF, which is a charity organization that supports trying to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. This would be a really cool experience, not only because it is the NYC Marathon, but it is the 50th NYC Marathon. I do have to raise $4,000 of donation money to be able to run the marathon, so I will start working on that over the next few months. Didn't think I would be running Boston and New York in the same year, but it looks like it might be happening!

Death Race Training Long Run today. 1 mile warmup around home, then headed out to McCoy. The plan was 6 rounds of the 4 mile course, 24 miles total. I got my first pair of trail running shoes last week, and they worked really well today, especially being able to grip the gravel and dirt on the uphills. They are the Nike Trail Kiger's, and I actually got a pretty good deal on them. Kept the pace around 8:30 per mile, except for the second to last round, which was around 9 minute mile pace. Even though it wasn't super hot, which is what tests you for the Death Race, it was still a good training long run.

Experimented with a 20 hour fast today, mostly because I wanted to see how my blood sugar levels would do. My levels stayed flat and consistent all day, which I was pretty happy about and surprised that my blood sugar levels didn't go low. Not going to do this everyday, but I will play with it on days where I am not running much or taking a rest day from running. Staying busy was the key though. Mowing the lawn and doing other chores around home that needed to be done, made it pretty easy.

PM- Probably one of the weirdest, yet best workouts, I have done in quite some time.10 minute warmup on the assault bike, then a 30 minute amrap: consisting of 2 minutes on the assault bike, then 10 free throws on the basketball banker, with a 200 meter penalty run for every free throw missed. Ended up getting 50 free throws total, which I am not sure if that is good or bad, but I will try this workout again sometime soon. Had a lot of fun changing things up though!

AM- 2 moile walk after going to Diamond Mountain with my dad and brother this morning. The snow drifts are settling, so there will be fencing days in my near future. The best part of that is getting to run on the dirt roads by our cabin!

AM- 10 slow miles. Legs were very tired today! Not sure why, but one good thing I found on my run is that the canal trail that I always like to run on is open, so hopefully the entire trail is open as well. Looking forward to some good summer runs on that route!

AM- Probably the most difficult race I have ever done. The concept is the same as last years Death Race, where you run a 4.1 mile loop at McCoy Flats, every hour on the hour, until there is just one person left. Last year, I made it 10 rounds, so I felt like I needed to make it at least 10 rounds of the race this year. I knew that I would feel a lot better this year, compared to last year, because of my gluten-free diet and my blood sugar levels doing much better over the past few months. The first 5 laps went by really quick, but the heat really started to rise as the afternoon came closer. By noon it was 90 degrees, and then by 3-4 pm, it was probably 100 degrees or very close. I pretty much had a mental break down on the 12th and final lap. I was very dehydrated and wasn't taking fluids down very well. It came down to three of us on the final lap, and I came in second on it and we basically called it there, because we all had pretty severe heat exhaustion. Overall, I am very happy that I placed and got a pretty cool rock with a design on it. Definitely the longest that I have ever ran in my life! Congrats to everyone else that ran today as well!

AM- 5 in Naples. Been slacking on the blog a bit lately. I haven't been running as much as I should be, because I am running the Mountain Madness 50 miler next weekend. This will be my first non-stop ultra, since the McCoy Flats Death Race is a stop-go-stop-go kind of race. Should be fun, but I am not sure what kind of time I will be able to run. Maybe around 7 hours?

AM- 28.6 meile ride on the canal trail today. Felt solid. This is probably the laziest I have been on the blog in a long time. I guess I have just been putting time into other areas lately and just kind of forgot about it. That is until I saw Eugene on Strava, and thought about the blog once again. Seems like a lot of people have been leaving this site, but I want to get back into it here. I even forgot to post my 50 mile race on here from last month. Haven't been running a lot since then, but planning on starting a new training block very soon! Still been getting in quite a few solid bike rides though!

AM- 16 mile ride later in the morning. Had a difficult time this morning, as one of my best friends (my Grandma JoeAnn) past away last night. I went over to her house every week to mow her lawn, and now that she is gone, I can't go over there and see her smiling face, and have the best chats together. She was an amazing woman, and she will be very missed by us all!

Figured I might as weell make a post on the blog since it has been a while since I have been on here, and I said that I was going to start a training block in October or November, but I guess my feelings changed a bit. Haven't really ran much since the Ashley 50 miler, which might just be what I have needed mentally and physically, a break from running. I might start training up tomorrow, next week, or next month, I don't really know, but I am kind of missing the sport so I do want to start back up soon. I have actually been doing quite a bit of cycling lately, and have done the most this week than I have done before, with three rides this week being 40, 42, and 50 miles. Moving to Logan, Utah on the 15th of January which is exciting and I am also kind of in a new relationship with a girl that I really like, so I am really happy and feel good about that as well :)
